Blaine Mengistu’s Digital Lab

Alexandria, VA
Digital Lab Ambassador

Hi! I’m Blaine Mengistu. I’m a 10th grader at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, VA. I’ve always been passionate about STEM—especially computer science and math—and I love using what I learn to make a difference. Outside of school, I enjoy playing chess, biking, and coding little side projects for fun. Establishing this digital lab has been one of the most meaningful things I’ve done—and I’m excited to keep learning and giving back.

My Digital Lab

School Name: Menelik II Primary School
Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Number of Students: 475
Devices: 5 Chromebooks + 1 EdTech device
Platform: Khan Academy (offline)

I’ve always felt that education shouldn’t depend on where you’re born or whether you have internet. When I found out about a device that lets students in Ethiopia access the full Khan Academy curriculum—completely offline—I knew I wanted to help make that happen.

So I did.

With the help of friends and family, I raised the funds to set up a digital learning lab at a school in Addis Ababa. The lab includes five Chromebooks and a small EdTech device that creates its own Wi-Fi network. Students just log in and start learning—no internet or complicated setup required.

This isn’t something I just supported from a distance—it’s a project I’ve taken ownership of. I stay in touch with the school and the local coordinator. I try to encourage the students, hear how they’re doing, and find ways to keep them motivated.

The students use the lab after school to catch up in math, science, and reading. Several have shared how often they go to the lab and how much it’s helping them—not just to fill learning gaps, but also to move ahead at their own pace, without relying on a teacher. That’s something they’ve never had access to before. And that’s what keeps me going.

I hope to visit the lab in person soon and spend time with the students directly.
